Why Does Binance Ask for Recipient Info When Withdrawing? What Is the Travel Rule?

Published on 2026-03-19 | 3 min

Why Binance requires recipient information for withdrawals and what the Travel Rule means for crypto transfers.

Why the Extra Info?

If recent withdrawals asked for recipient names and addresses, it's because of the Travel Rule — an international anti-money-laundering regulation now extended to crypto.

What Is the Travel Rule?

From FATF's Recommendation 16: when crypto transfers exceed ~$1,000, the sending service must collect and transmit sender and recipient identity information. Purpose: combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

How Binance Implements It

During withdrawal, you may need to specify: Is this to yourself or a third party? Recipient's name, platform, and region.

Transfers to yourself: simplified info. To other exchanges: provide exchange name and recipient info. To third parties: full recipient identity.

Impact

Slightly longer withdrawal process (extra fields). Most transfers aren't delayed. Deposits are unaffected.

Tips for Speed

Know recipient info in advance. Save frequent addresses. Select "To self" when applicable.
